The Fashion Edit: Style Tips For Petite Women With Felicia

Here on The Wednesday Edit, we are a community. We have a talented pool of guest bloggers who have signed up to write informative and enjoyable content for us.

This week we have the beautiful Felicia from Ms. Shopaholic Diaries, who knows a thing or two about looking fly and on point with her style, and that is because she has tailored her style to fit her petite frame - and she's here to help you.

Credit cards at the ready, she's going to inspire your next shopping spree!

Being a petite woman (5 feet, 2 inches tall), I have come across a great deal of difficulty when shopping and dressing myself. For years, petite women have been confronted with a lack of clothing options on the retail front. While some of us may find it whimsical to shop in the children’s section for jeans, it’s not always ideal. Equipped with the knowledge from a few of my favorite petite fashion bloggers (Jean of Extra Petite and Wendy of Wendy’s Lookbook), I compiled a few helpful style tips for petite girls like me!

The measurements petite women should pay most attention to are inseam, arm length, garment length, waist to hem, and armholes. These are the areas where most petite women face difficulty because we typically have shorter and thinner legs and arms, shorter torsos, and small waists. These measurements can be used for quick and easy tailoring and compare sizes when shopping.

Know Where to Shop

Petite clothing lines have become more and more abundant over the past few years as several stores began carrying petite items (identical to their misses items) to meet our demands. Some of my favorite places to buy petite clothing are ASOS, Missguided, Pretty Little Thing, and Nordstrom. I also love shopping at boutiques because they owners/shopgirls are more knowledgeable about the fit and style of each brand. A great site to find local and online boutiques is The Boutique Hub.

Have a Go-To Tailor

Find an amazing tailor and stick with them. Having a tailor that knows your preferences, your style, and most importantly, your size is life-changing! Recently, I purchased a maxi skirt from a local thrift store for $3. I knew it was too long for me but I couldn’t let a deal like that pass me up! I took it to my tailor and she had it fitted perfectly for my height and waist in less than an hour.

Being short means wearing heels almost all the time if you want to appear taller. I love heels so I have absolutely no problem with this but I know plenty of women who are not willing to put up with the pain that comes with wearing high heels. My advice: get you some wedges! Wedges, especially platform wedges, add up to 6 inches of height. Plus, they are more comfortable than traditional pumps or heels.

Trends & Styles

Certain trends aren’t for us petite women: boyfriend jeans, wide belts, batwing sleeves, and oversized blazers for example. Knowing what does and does not work for our body type will put the fun back in fashion. Some styles that are great for petite women are high waisted bottoms, cuffed skinny jeans, mini skirts, knee-high boots, full skirts, and structured outerwear.

Now that you’re equipped with these little lady style tips, let’s run down to the nearest mall and get to shopping.
